Maryland Sues Dali Owner, Operator Over Baltimore Bridge Collapse
The state of Maryland on Tuesday filed civil claims against the owner and operator of the cargo ship that struck the Francis Scott Key Bridge in March, killing six people and paralyzing a major transportation artery for the U.S. Northeast. The lawsuit seeks damages from two Singaporean companies that are the registered owner of the Dali cargo ship, Grace Ocean Pte Ltd, and its manager, Synergy Marine Group, for the cost of the bridge, cleanup efforts, environmental claims and other costs. Maryland said the incident was "entirely preventable" and caused "massive damages and other significant harm to the state of Maryland and its citizens that will continue for many years."The U.S.
North Pole of Inaccessibility Reached by Cruise Ship
Ponant’s Le Commandant Charcot became the first cruise ship to reach the North Pole of Inaccessibility on September 12.The North Pole of Inaccessibility is the point on the Arctic Ocean that is furthest from land. First described in 1909 by the Russian polar explorer Alexander Koltchak, the exact geographic coordinates were established in 2013 by Jim McNeill with the help of NASA and satellites: 85°48’ North, 176°09’ East. It is located at 1,465km (910 miles) from Utqiasuk in Alaska, 1,390km (864 miles) from Franz Josef Land in Russia and 1,070km (665 miles) from Ellesmere Island in Canada.Passengers on board included 20 international scientists collecting data on this unexplored area.
Dutch See Rise in Russian LNG Imports, Urge Further Sanctions
Imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia at the Netherlands' main terminal in Rotterdam have risen in recent months, underlining the need for further sanctions, the Dutch government said on Monday.Imports of Russian LNG at the GATE terminal in Europe's largest sea port have increased in the third quarter, as the average number of Russian carriers that arrived there doubled to two per month, the government said. This increase could be an effect of new sanctions that came into effect this summer, it said, prohibiting the throughput of Russian LNG from the EU to countries outside the union - but not the import of it for EU countries themselves.
Amogy's Ammonia-powered Tugboat Sets Sail
A 67-year-old tugboat converted to run on Amogy's cleaner-burning ammonia-to-power technology has set sail for the first time in upstate New York. The 105-foot tug, originally built in 1957 and recently renamed NH3 Kraken, is the first vessel globally fitted with the innovative, carbon-free power system, developed by Amogy to reduce emissions from hard to abate sectors such as maritime. The conversion project was carried out at Feeney Shipyard in Kingston, N.Y. and involved a comprehensive overhaul of the tugboat's original diesel generators and electric motors, integrating the Brooklyn startup's 1-megawatt ammonia-to-power system.
Families of Workers Killed in Baltimore Bridge Tragedy Sue Dali Owner, Operator
The families of the six workers who died in the March collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore filed lawsuits on Friday against the owner and operator of the cargo ship that struck the bridge. The lawsuits filed in Maryland federal court by the families of Carlos Daniel Hernandez Estrella, Alejandro Hernandez Fuentes, Miguel Angel Luna, Dorlian Ronial Castillo Cabrera, Maynor Yasir Suazo Sandoval and Jose Mynor Lopez seek unspecified damages from the registered owner of the ship, Grace Ocean Pte Ltd, and its manager, Synergy Marine Group, claiming they negligently allowed the ship to depart Baltimore when they knew it was plagued by mechanical issues.
