Magufuli Bans Registration of Foreign Ships in Tanzania

Tanzanian President John Magufuli on Friday put a temporary ban on the registration of foreign ships in the country and ordered over 400 vessels to be investigated for allegations of involvement in criminal activity. The ban came after at least five foreign-owned ships flying Tanzania's flag were seized in various parts of the world carrying illegal consignments of weapons and narcotics. The maritime authority in the Indian Ocean archipelago of Zanzibar has in previous years been accused of allowing Iranian and North Korean vessels to use the Tanzanian flag to circumvent United Nations sanctions. Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous territory of Tanzania. "He (Magufuli) issued the instructions ...

The Iranian tanker that sank after a collision in the East China Sea, causing the worst oil ship disaster in years, had its paperwork in order, according an initial review by maritime authorities in Panama, whose flag it was sailing under.   The large tanker Sanchi (IMO:9356608) sank on Sunday after crashing into the freighter CF Crystal (IMO:9497050) and drifting ablaze for days. The ship's crew of 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis are believed to have been killed.   Fernando Solorzano, head of Panama's Merchant Marine, told Reuters there was no initial sign that the stricken ship was in breach of any security protocols.

Royal IHC Launches TSHD Newbuild

A new multipurpose 5,450m3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) was officially named and launched during a ceremony on January 11 at Royal IHC’s shipyard in Krimpen aan den IJssel, The Netherlands. The dredger, named DC Orisant, is being built for a joint venture between Den Herder (Reimerswaal Dredging) and Group de Cloedt and is slated for delivery in mid-2018 for work in the dredging and offshore wind markets. “The DC Orisant is a TSHD with full system redundancy and can perform a wide range of projects. This is due to its integrated design and the high standard of dredging equipment on board,” said Bert den Herder, owner of Reimerswaal Dredging.
