NTSB Urges New Safeguards Following Probe into Deadly Conception Boat Fire

A U.S. safety board on Tuesday called for new safeguards for small passenger vessels following a September 2019 early morning boat fire in California that killed 34 people.The 75-foot (23-m) recreational diving vessel, Conception, with 33 passengers and six crew aboard, was anchored off Santa Cruz Island when it caught fire. All 33 passengers and one crew member died of smoke inhalation because they were trapped in the berthing area while a fire burned above.The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) urged all vessels with overnight accommodations to be required to have interconnected smoke detectors in all passenger areas and secondary means of escape that lead into a different space

An oil tanker operated by Venezuelan state oil company Petroleos de Venezuela on Tuesday approached a floating oil facility where it is expected to receive crude via transfer at sea amid environmental concerns, Refinitiv Eikon data showed.Environmental groups have in the past two weeks expressed concern about a potential spill of the 1.3 million barrels of crude aboard the Nabarima oil facility - part of the Petrosucre joint venture between PDVSA and Italy's Eni SpA - after images showed the vessel tilting to its side.

Singaporean-based Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) said it will trial biofuel bunkers aboard its 2010-built 47,377 dwt MR tanker Pacific Beryl.EPS, which has said it aims to test various alternative marine fuels in an effort to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, has appointed Dutch-based GoodFuels to supply the biofuel bunkers."Alternative marine fuels are essential transitional fuels that will pave the way towards industry-wide decarbonization and the preservation of the environment for future generations," EPS said in a statement. The bunkering took place in Dutch waters on October 9. GoodFuels supplied EPS with a residual-fuel equivalent Bio-Fuel Oil (BFO).
