The ICC International Maritime Bureau (IMB) has reported an increase in the number of crew taken hostage or kidnapped in 2024.The IMB annual Piracy and Armed Robbery Report recorded 116 incidents against ships in 2024 compared to 120 in 2023 and 115 in 2022. It reveals that 94 vessels were boarded, 13 attempted attacks, six vessels hijacked and three fired upon.While the number of reported incidents in 2024 remains similar to those reported in 2023 and 2022, the number of crew taken hostage or kidnapped increased to 126 taken hostage in 2024 compared to 73 in 2023 and 41 in 2022. Twelve crew were reported kidnapped, compared to 14 in 2023 and two in 2022.

DEME and Van Oord have secured separate contracts from Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) for installation works at the 500 MW Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm in Taiwan.DEME, through its Taiwanese joint venture CDWE, has been awarded a substantial contract for the transport and installation of foundations and the offshore substation for the Fengmiao 1 offshore wind farm in Taiwan.For DEME, substantial contract means it is valued between $155 million and $310 million.CDWE is responsible for the transport and installation of 33 jacket foundations, the pin piles anchoring them to the seabed, and the offshore substation.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has signed into law a bill authorizing the development of offshore wind farms, a statement said late on Friday, a bid to strengthen the country's energy security and spark a wave of investment.The new law foresees incentives for the development of offshore energy projects in Brazilian territorial waters, the statement said.Offshore wind speeds tend to be faster and steadier than on land, a potential advantage compared with wind farms built in a continent. But offshore wind farms can be expensive, difficult to build and potentially affect marine animals and birds, according to the American Geosciences Institute.
