The first-in-the-nation offshore wind training facility will be located at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.In late October, with much fanfare, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker, Stephen Pike, CEO of the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and many others joined officials from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) to launch the first-in-the-nation offshore wind crew transfer training facility. The group of state and college representatives also officially christened a new training vessel. The event underscored the efforts at MMA to both support, but also take full advantage of what stakeholders believe is the advent of offshore wind here in the United States.

Torm Orders LR2 Newbuilds from GSI

Danish product tanker company TORM announced on Thursday it has entered into a deal to purchase a pair of LR2 tankers from Chinese state-owned builder Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for expected delivery in the fourth quarter of 2021.TORM, which currently has 29 GSI vessels in its fleet, said the newbuilds will be constructed "to optimize trading and fuel- efficiency" and will be equipped with scrubbers. The vessels will also be prepared for a potential later dual-fuel installation.TORM Executive Director Jacob Meldgaard said the company utilized its long-term relationship with GSI to enter into an agreement to purchase the vessels.

South Korea's military said on Tuesday it plans to expand the deployment of an anti-piracy unit now operating off the coast of Africa to the area around the Strait of Hormuz, after the United States pressed for help in guarding oil tankers.Attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Iran last year prompted U.S. officials to call for allies to join a planned maritime security mission.While South Korea, a key U.S. ally, will deploy its forces to the area, including the Gulf, it will not officially be joining a coalition of forces known as the International Maritime Security Construct, the defense ministry said.

Containership Loses Steering After Engine Room Fire

A containership lost steering off the coast of Mozambique on Monday after its crew put out an engine room fire on board the 680-foot vessel.Towage operator KOTUG International said two of its vessels responded after picking up a mayday call from the Marshall-Islands-flagged Em Oinousses, approximately 50 miles off the coast of Nacala, Mozambique, while en route from Maputo, Mozambique to Mombasa, Kenya.KOTUG said its Rotortugs RT Spirit and RT Magic carried out the salvage in high seas, making quick connections to the disabled vessel for tow into Nacala. Em Oinousses' entire 25-person crew was able to disembark in Nacala without injury on Tuesday.
