Business interruption, pandemic outbreak and cyber incidents -- three separate but 'strongly interlinked' matters -- lead the pack as the top threats to maritime in 2021, according to the 10th Allianz survey on risk in the maritime sector.The maritime industry, on its best day, is fraught with risk, as people, machinery and the bulk of world trade regularly traverses some of the most perilous conditions on the planet. According to the 10th Allianz Risk Barometer 2021 for the sector, a trio of COVID-19-linked risks pose the greatest threat to maritime in 2021, but these three are far from alone.
Proman Stena Bulk Ltd confirmed that steel cutting has commenced for its state-of-the-art IMOIIMeMAX methanol-fuelled 49,900 DWT vessel Stena Pro Patria, which is due for delivery in early 2022. Stena Pro Patria will be the first of the three methanol vessels to be built by the joint venture between Swedish Stena Bulk and the Swiss-based Proman Shipping.The steel cutting for Stena Pro Patria, which started on January 7, 2021, is taking place at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) in China and marks the operational beginning of Stena Bulk and Proman’s journey together as a joint venture.
Seattle-based SeaTac Marine Services announced that it has acquired a new heavy deck cargo barge, a barge built in 2010 that can haul up to 11,000 tons and with nearly 30,000 square feet of deck space, making it one of the larger barges in the Pacific cargo trade. The 300 x 100 feet barge was purchased from Signet Marine in late 2020. Specializing in general cargo and heavy lift machinery, the Atlas will fit well into SeaTac Marine’s regular shipping schedule to Anchorage and Seward. SeaTac Marine is modifying the barge to maximize cargo protection and space.
Valmet is enhancing emission control with its patented and fully automatic water treatment solution for the marine scrubber system and exhaust gas recirculation system. Valmet Marine Water Treatment system consists of four different modules that are designed to be easily fit in different vessel layouts. Due to the layout flexibility, the water treatment system can be installed both in new building vessels as well as retrofits.Valmet has designed its marine water treatment systems with the environment and ease-of-use in mind, and to that end it doesn’t use chemicals to treat the effluent, so daily cleaning of the unit is done with plain sea water.
KVH Industries, Inc. announced Tuesday that GreenSteam, developers of vessel performance optimization solutions for a sustainable shipping industry, has joined the KVH Watch Solution Partner program and will offer the KVH Watch service as part of its enhanced performance platform for improved data mobility. KVH Watch’s dedicated connectivity will support GreenSteam’s core services, facilitating the movement of data from vessels to shore-based analysts more frequently and reliably in real-time.
