A design for the world’s first large liquefied hydrogen carrier has been granted approval in principle (AIP) from the classification society Korean Register and flag state Liberian Registry.The 20,000 cubic meters class vessel was developed by Hyundai Heavy Industries Group and Hyundai Glovis in partnership with the Korean Register and the Liberian Registry, and HHI Group’s Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and Hyundai Mipo Dockyard (HMD) announced they have received the AIP on Thursday.

A project to produce a novel emissions-slashing hydrogen passenger ferry has been granted €8 million ($9.4 million) in European funding as the Norwegian government announces strengthened focus on development and commercialization of hydrogen as a carbon-neutral fuel.The HySHIP project involves 14 European partners collaborating on the design and construction of a new ro-ro demonstration vessel running on liquid green hydrogen (LH2), as well as the establishment of a viable LH2 supply chain and bunkering platform. The ship will be operated by Norwegian maritime industry group Wilhelmsen and will distribute LH2 to hydrogen hubs along the Norwegian coast.

Scorpio Bulkers announced it has sold another bulk carrier, marking its seventh ship sale since revealing plans to pivot away from dry bulk shipping toward offshore wind services.The Monoco-based shipowner said on Thursday it reached a deal with an unnamed, unaffiliated third party to sell the 2016-built Ultramax SBI Zeus for approximately $18.5 million.Since September 28, Scorpio Bulkers has also sold SBI Hera, SBI Phoenix, SBI Samson, SBI Conga, SBI Sousta and SBI Rock. Australian-based shipbuilding group Austal said it has entered into an agreement to acquire compatriot ship repair and support business BSE Maritime Solutions Group.BSE Maritime Solutions, which operates in Cairns and Brisbane, serves defense, commercial, tourism and luxury vessel customers, including Australian Border Force, BAE Systems, Thales and Svitzer. The deal, which comes at an enterprise value of A$27.5 million (US$19.6 million), aligns with Austal’s strategy to continue building the its key support business, the company said, noting that revenue from its support segment has grown at an annual rate of 28% over the past four years to reach $360 million (US$256.

Norwegian offshore shipbuilder Ulstein, constructing the Nexans Aurora cable layer for Nexans, has this week said that the installation of Maats cable laying equipment on the vessel has begun.Per Ulstein, Maats’ & Marine Fabricators’ installation team arrived on site on October 14, to begin the installation, which kicked off with the two lay wheels being fitted at the stern. The wheels, in combination with fairings, assist in guiding the cable in a controlled manner as it enters and exits the vessel."Following the lay wheels, final installation work is now being completed on the Maats Tensioners and 75t SWL Capstan," Ulstein said.
