Captain Eli Ferguson was a prominent figure during the 19th century, particularly known for his service in the Civil War. He was born on April 12, 1832, in Holmes County, Ohio, and eventually moved to Iron County, Missouri. His third son of Tilman Dixon Ferguson and Mary (Compton) Ferguson.
Ferguson married Harriet Hatcher, born May 23, 1835, in Tennessee. The couple settled in Pilot Knob, Missouri, where they raised 11 children. Ferguson's career alternated between farming, school teaching, and land surveying. The outbreak of the Civil War saw Ferguson take a notable role on the side of the Union.
Ferguson organized a company of men from the Arcadia Valley and surrounding areas, leading as their captain. Initially attached to Colonel James Lindsay's 68th Enrolled Missouri Militia, this unit quickly demonstrated its efficacy and was recognized as Company I of the 47th Regiment of Missouri Volunteers.
Ferguson's company participated in numerous skirmishes and battles, amassing a commendable record. The leadership and bravery exemplified by Captain Ferguson earned him the respect of both his men and his superiors.
After the war, Eli Ferguson resumed his prior occupations, contributing to the fields of education and cartography. He was elected Iron County Surveyor multiple times and continued to influence the community through his work and steadfast ethics.
Captain Eli Ferguson is remembered not only for his military service but also for his invaluable contributions to his community in the post-war years. His legacy remains a testament to the spirit of dedication and leadership that defined much of his life.
