Aker Yards SA
Aker Yards SA was a subsidiary of the Norwegian company Aker Yards ASA, one of the world's largest and most well-known shipbuilding groups. Established to focus on the French shipbuilding market, Aker Yards SA specialized in constructing a broad range of ships, including cruise ships, ferries, and other types of vessels. The company's shipyards were primarily located in France, with notable facilities in Saint-Nazaire, renowned for their size and capabilities in building complex and large vessels.
In 2008, Aker Yards ASA was acquired by the South Korean shipbuilding giant STX Offshore & Shipbuilding, resulting in a rebranding of Aker Yards SA under the new name STX France. The acquisition led to further developments and changes within the company, which continued to focus on the construction of cruise ships and other vessels.
In 2018, STX France was acquired by Italian shipbuilding company Fincantieri, a major player in global shipbuilding, and was renamed Chantiers de l'Atlantique. This new iteration of the company continues to operate in Saint-Nazaire, maintaining its reputation for quality and innovation in the maritime industry.
Throughout its existence and through the transitions of ownership and branding, Aker Yards SA and its successors have played pivotal roles in advancing shipbuilding technology and maintaining the heritage of European maritime craftsmanship.
