IMO Adopts Tougher Resolution to Tackle Illicit 'Shadow' Fleet
The United Nations' shipping agency on Wednesday adopted a resolution targeting illicit shipping practices from the so-called unregulated "shadow fleet" in an effort to clamp down on unsafe activities at sea. There are hundreds of ageing oil tankers that form part of a parallel fleet of vessels transporting oil including for Russia, which has been hit by Western sanctions but also the enforcement of Group of Seven regulation that caps the price of Moscow's oil exports at $60 with penalties imposed on those that ship above that price.Iran, which has also been struggling with separate sanctions in recent years, has also turned to such ships to export its oil, sources have said.

Containership Strikes Floating Bridge in the Suez Canal
A container ship collided with a floating bridge in the eastern lane of the Suez Canal on Wednesday but the passage of ships through the waterway was not interrupted, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) said.Tugboats helped the One Orpheus after it suffered a fault with its rudder while transiting the canal on its way from Singapore to the Netherlands, the authority said in a statement. The incident occurred in the eastern lane of the middle section of the canal, built as an expansion that was completed in 2015.

Wärtsilä to Roll Out Four More Methanol Engines
Technology group Wärtsilä said it plans to introduce another four methanol engines to its portfolio. In addition to the Wärtsilä 32 methanol engine launched last year, Wärtsilä will add the Wärtsilä 20, Wärtsilä 31, Wärtsilä 46F and Wärtsilä 46TS, available for deliveries at different points from 2025 onward.Methanol is one of the primary alternative fuel choices for the shipping industry to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. 'Green' methanol can be produced using renewable energy sources and carbon capture technology, making it a sustainable and carbon-neutral option.

Sails and Satellite Navigation Could Cut Shipping Industry’s Emissions By Up to a Third
In the vast expanse of the world’s oceans, a transformation is underway. The international shipping sector, made up of thousands of massive cargo ships laden with many of the goods we buy, emits carbon dioxide (CO₂) roughly equivalent to the entire country of Germany. Our research emphasises the need for immediate action. Reducing shipping emissions by 34% by 2030 is necessary to stay on course with the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal. But with low-carbon fuel pipelines unlikely to be available at the necessary scale until at least the 2030s, how can the industry meet its short-term target?Enter a new solution with ancient origins: sails.
