Thirty-one fisherman have been rescued from a fishing vessel that caught fire and began to sink off the coast of Eastern Canada.At 7:05 p.m., Tuesday, the Joint Rescue Coordination Center in Halifax notified watchstanders at the U.S. Coast Guard First District Command Center that the 143-foot Atlantic Destiny was disabled with a fire on board, and was taking on water in 26-foot seas and 35-mile-per-hour winds.A U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod HC-144 Ocean Sentry fixed-wing crew, and two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crews launched and arrived on scene.
Philly Shipyard on Wednesday marked the start of fabrication for the second of five planned National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMV). The purpose-built, state-of-the-art training ships will be used by America’s state maritime academies.The first steel plates cut by the yard’s state-of-the-art plasma cutting machine will be later joined into a double bottom, mid-ship section.The occasion was marked by a brief steel cutting ceremony attended by representatives from Philly Shipyard, TOTE Services and U.S. DOT Maritime Administration (MARAD).
Lawmakers in the U.S. are reintroducing legislation aiming codify the U.S. Coast Guard’s icebreaking mission on the Great Lakes and increase the icebreaking capacity of the Great Lakes fleet.“Inadequate icebreaking capacity in the Great Lakes is costing us thousands of American jobs and millions in business revenue. We must boost our icebreaking capacity in the Great Lakes to keep our maritime commerce moving,” said Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), who introduced the bipartisan Great Lakes Winter Commerce Act alongside Senator Todd Young (R-IN) and Gary Peters (D-MI).
The Chinese-built hybrid accommodation vessel MWV Falgout has been delivered to end client Brunei Shell Petroleum.The 80-meter vessel, a new purchase for Bruneian owners JISCO Marine Sdn Bhd, will be employed on long-term charter for the Bruneian oil and gas company. The ship was officially accepted into charter on February 17.Vroon Offshore Services (VOS) Singapore secured a two-year ship management contract for the vessel at the end of 2020, though the company said early months of the project involved taking delivery of MWV Falgout in China, mobilizing the vessel and delivering it on to the end client.
Logimatic said it has signed a contract with Hapag-Lloyd that will see the German shipping company replace several existing fleet management systems with SERTICA.As part of its digital transformation and centralization efforts, Hapag-Lloyd will implement SERTICA on more than 70 containerships, creating a common Technical Fleet Management System for its fleets both in Hamburg and Dubai.Jan Rüsch, Business Project Manager at Hapag-Lloyd, said, “With a smooth transition to a shared fleet management software platform across two fleets, we expect to increase efficiency and reduce costs. We aim to achieve a higher degree of transparency, lean approval processes and a fast order process.
