A Bangladeshi woman whose husband died while dismantling an oil tanker at a shipbreaking yard in 2018 can file a negligence claim against a British company involved in the vessel’s sale, London’s High Court ruled this week.Khalil Mollah, 32, fell to his death while working on a tanker called the EKTA in the port city of Chattogram in southeastern Bangladesh, where scores of end-of-life ships are sent to be scrapped each year.British lawyers representing his widow, Hamida Begum, took her case to court in April 2019, arguing that Maran (UK) Ltd was responsible for the ship ending up in Bangladesh, where working conditions in shipbreaking yards were known to be dangerous.
Delta Launch Services, the operating company for the Associated Branch pilots on the SW Pass of the Mississippi, has taken delivery of a new pilot boat from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding, Duclos Corporation. This is the sixth St. John’s Class launch built for the Delta pilots by the Somerset, Mass. shipyard.The new launch, a sister-ship to the Assistant delivered in 2018, measures of 52.6’ overall, with a beam of 16.11’ and a draft of 4.8’. The all-aluminum pilot boat features the Ray Hunt Designs Deep-V hull. It is powered by twin Caterpillar C-18 EPA Tier 3 diesel engines, each delivering 671 Bhp at 2,100 rpm, with a top speed of 26 knots.

The Methanol Institute (MI) has joined a study led by the China Waterborne Transportation Research Institute (CWTRI), the think tank of the Chinese Ministry of Transport, which will consider the technical and operational requirements for the use of methanol as a marine fuel. The study is supported by methanol producers and distributors Methanex and Shanghai Huayi Energy Chemical Co., Ltd.Based on the characteristics of China’s energy and shipping industries, the study will create comprehensive guidance and policy suggestions for the use of methanol as a marine fuel, reflecting the experience already gained in large and small methanol-fueled marine engines
Norwegian company Teknotherm Marine will provide the Heating, Ventilation & Air-Conditioning (HVAC) and Refrigeration systems for four offshore wind vessels currently being built in Spain.The vessels, to be built by Spanish shipyards Gondán Shipbuilders and Balenciaga Shipyard, have been ordered by owner Edda Wind/Østensjø Rederi. Gondán Shipbuildershas started construction of two 88m CSOVs (Commissioning Service Operation Vessels) for up to 120 persons. The first CSOV is expected for delivery in the first quarter of 2022 and will be chartered by Ocean Breeze for a period of 11 years. Balenciaga Shipyard will build two 82m SOV (Service Operation Vessels) for up to 60 persons.
