Just days away from a verdict on its ultimate fate, the historic cruise liner SS United States has received a lifeline in the form of a $150,000 donation to a fundraising effort which aims to save “America’s flagship” and restore the storied vessel to its former glory. American Commercial Barge Line’s leadership and early adoption of ZF Marine’s z-drive propulsion technology underscores a growing trend on the inland waterways. American Commercial Barge Line (ACBL) has been around a long time – since 1915, to be exact – and along the way has developed into one of the dominant players in the inland marine transportation industry. With a passion for safety and a green footprint, ACBL has always embraced technology and innovation. The U.K.'s first maritime autonomous systems testing service is set to launch later this year. BAE Systems said it has been awarded £457,000 (approximately $594,700) in grant funding from the Solent Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) to design and deliver the U.K.’s first dedicated autonomous systems testing service. Based around Portsmouth, Southampton and the South East of the Isle of Wight, BAE Systems will work with ASV Global (ASV), Blue Bear Systems Research (Blue Bear), Marine Electronic Systems (MES), SeeByte and the University of Southampton to provide the service’s infrastructure, with other organizations set to join later on.
Nakilat signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Höegh LNG, exploring collaboration for Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) business as part of its diversification strategy for opportunities and solutions to delivering LNG to the global markets, with FSRU being a leading-edge technology for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) market. Essentially a floating LNG import terminal, this technology has become a strategic solution for countries without LNG receiving terminal infrastructure, enabling better accessibility of clean energy. “Nakilat views this strategic alliance with Höegh LNG, as a huge stepping stone for further growth," said Nakilat’s Managing Director Eng.
Mapping and shaping the growth of marine hybrid means many things to different stakeholders. The journey leads us all to the same place. If you follow the advancements in automotive design, the term or tag “hybrid” has come to define the alternative energy movement on our roads and highways. HEV autos have moved past Ford and GM in Detroit and into the hands of contemporary entrepreneurs and inventors the likes of Tesla’s Evan Musk or Dr. Victor Wouk. BMW, Ferrari, Bentley and Rolls Royce have all followed the paths of these geniuses and have developed or are developing electric hybrid propulsion systems.
